What Makes This Gyro Sauce Recipe So Good?

  • Low Carb. Only one carb per serving.
  • Easy. Simply mix the ingredients and eat.
  • Few Ingredients. A 5 ingredient recipe.
  • Refreshing. The perfect fresh taste to add to your gyro , salad , or shawarma .

This Tzatziki Sauce Recipe is yet another stupid simple but delicious recipe where you basically throw things together in a bowl and eat. It’s hard to see how five little ingredients can produce so much flavor, but somehow they all do, and it all works beautifully.

What Is Tzatziki?

Tzatziki is a creamy, refreshing Greek sauce made from strained yogurt mixed with grated cucumber, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, and fresh herbs such as dill or mint.

It has a cool, tangy flavor and smooth texture, making it a perfect complement to grilled meats, gyros, pita bread, or fresh vegetables.

Often served chilled, tzatziki adds a burst of brightness and balance to rich or spicy dishes.

Is Tzatziki Sauce Healthy?

In my opinion, yes. This tzatziki sauce recipe is low in calories, low in carbs , and low sugar. Plus it keeps you from reaching for a higher calorie or sugar sauce or salad dressing to accompany some of your favorite dishes.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 1 large cucumber - The cucumber is the refreshing base of tzatziki, adding a cool, crisp texture and mild sweetness. It’s usually grated and squeezed to remove excess water, ensuring the sauce stays thick and creamy rather than watery.
  • 1 cup full-fat Greek Yogurt - Greek yogurt provides the rich, tangy foundation for tzatziki. Its thick texture creates the creamy body of the sauce, while its slight tartness balances the freshness of the cucumber and the sharpness of the garlic.
  • 2-3 cloves Garlic - Garlic infuses the tzatziki with a bold, savory flavor and characteristic Mediterranean depth. A small amount goes a long way, adding zest and aroma to the sauce.
  • 1 tablespoon Tahini - Tahini adds a subtle nuttiness and smooth richness to the sauce, giving it extra body and a slightly earthy undertone that complements the tang of the yogurt.
  • 1 squirt Lemon Juice - Lemon juice brightens the flavors, providing a touch of acidity that cuts through the creaminess and enhances the freshness of the cucumber and yogurt.
  • Salt - Salt sharpens and balances the overall flavor, bringing out the natural sweetness of the cucumber and the tang of the yogurt.
  • Chopped Parsley - Parsley adds a pop of color and a hint of fresh, herbal flavor to finish the dish beautifully. It’s optional but enhances both presentation and taste.

How To Make This Tzatziki Recipe

  1. Chop. Cut up cucumbers.
  2. Measure. Measure yogurt and spices.
  3. Pour. Squirt a little lemon juice.
  4. Mix. Stir all of the ingredients together.
  5. Serve. Add to one of your favorite dishes.

Tips And Tricks

Making tzatziki is simple, but a few clever techniques can take your sauce from good to restaurant-quality. Here are some tips and tricks for making tzatziki sauce that ensure the perfect flavor and texture every time:

  • Use pre-minced garlic . For the garlic in this dish, I can’t mince it finely enough, so I tend to use about half a teaspoon of pre-minced garlic.
  • Don’t work too hard. I’ve seen recipes that ask you to shred and then drain the cucumbers, but I have to say I almost never drain them when I’m making Tzatziki.

Variations

Tzatziki is wonderfully versatile, and you can easily adapt it to suit your taste or complement different dishes. Here are some variations for making tzatziki sauce that put a creative twist on the classic recipe:

  • Spicy- Stir in a pinch of cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, or a dash of hot sauce for a zesty kick.
  • Avocado- Mash half an avocado into the mixture for extra creaminess and a boost of healthy fats.
  • Beet- Add finely grated roasted beets for a stunning pink color and earthy sweetness.

What Do You Eat Tzatziki With?

I can eat a whole bowl of this tzatziki by myself. I use it as a sauce when I make gyros , either in the Instant Pot or in the oven and it adds a fresh, light taste to the dish.

Most people would put this into a pita along with the meat, but since I try to eat keto, I end up just eating the meat with the dip, and honestly, that’s where the flavor is at anyway, so it works for me.

I also use it when I make Chicken Shawarma. By the time the chicken cooks you could whip up this Tzatziki recipe, cut up a few vegetables for a raw salad, and hey presto! Dinner.

How Long Does Tzatziki Last?

When you make this tzatziki sauce recipe , you’ll want to make sure you have a plan to eat it within the next three days. I know, that doesn’t sound like much time. But it’s so delicious I promise you won’t have an issue finishing it!

Can You Freeze It?

Freezing tzatziki is not recommended because the texture changes significantly once thawed. The high water content in the cucumber and the dairy base of Greek yogurt tend to separate, resulting in a watery and grainy consistency.

While it’s safe to freeze for up to two months, the sauce will lose its creamy texture and fresh flavor after thawing.

Why you want homemade Keto Pizza

Commercial cauliflower crust pizzas start out with a lot of promise–or rather promises. You see cauliflower crust and you assume low carb pizza!

You would be wrong.

If you are buying pizza with cauliflower crust, I urge you to be careful and read labels. Many of those will not fit into your low carb macros at all. Many also have wheat and are absolutely NOT gluten-free .

Similarly, while there are a lot of keto pizzas using fathead dough, sometimes I just like to sneak some vegetables into a pizza crust. Also, it’s delicious so win-win!

Similarly, there’s often a lot of sugar in the pizza sauce they use. So I actually created a quick, no-cook, low carb pizza sauce for you as well. You can whip this up while the crust is cooking.

This keto pizza recipe is always a crowd-pleaser. It is cheesy, full of flavor, and will satisfy all of your pizza cravings.

Are Pizza Toppings Low Carb?

Some pizza toppings can be higher in carbs than others. So before you think about loading down your homemade low carb pizza with all of the toppings, remember that they’re not all created equally. You’ll want to avoid toppings like pineapple, BBQ Sauce, or an excess of sliced tomatoes.

The toppings I decided to put on my perfect pizza are all keto-friendly. So feel free to follow my lead. It starts with a keto pizza crust made of cauliflower, cheese, and seasonings. Then that low carb pizza crust is topped with:

  • Melted cheese
  • Rich keto tomato sauce
  • Salami or sausage
  • Peppers
  • And any other toppings you like!

Forget takeout or delivery—and unwanted carbs. You’ll love this easy keto pizza.

Tips and Tricks for Making the Best Low Carb PizzaEver

  • If you grease the base of your pan before you add the baking parchment it will help the parchment stay in place.
  • You may need to remove the lid from the food processor and push the contents down a little to get everything to blend well.
  • The mix for the base may look too liquid. DO NOT WORRY! As the cheese melts it will firm up and create a solid base.
  • Run a knife down the sides of the pan when it comes out of the oven, this will prevent the cheese from sticking as it cools.
  • Do not try and remove the pizza from the pan immediately. Letting it cool for 5 or even 10 minutes allows the cheese to firm up a little. This makes the pizza easier to cut.
  • To save leftovers, cut into ideal portion sizes and refrigerate in an airtight box with baking parchment between the slices.

Can You Make This Low Carb Pizza Vegetarian?

If you want to skip the meat, you can swap plant-based sausage crumbles for the salami or sausage, or just leave the meat out to make a keto vegetarian pizza.

Is This Keto Cauliflower Pizza Gluten Free?

Yes, it is. This keto cauliflower pizza crust is made without grains, so you know it is gluten-free as well! You don’t have to miss out on pizza night because of a gluten allergy.

Can You Make It Ahead of Time and Refrigerate or Freeze It?

The keto cauliflower pizza crust can be made in advance. Cook it through step 5 and let it cool to room temperature.

Once cooled, wrap the crust well in plastic wrap. Store it in the refrigerator for up to a week or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

What Do You Serve With Low Carb Pizza?

  • I like to serve it with a crisp, refreshing green salad dressed with Keto Mustard Salad Dressing .
  • Antipasto Salad with Pesto Vinaigrette is a hearty salad loaded with Italian flavor that goes perfectly with pizza.
  • Red Onion and Orange Salad has the bright flavors of oranges and red onions as well as feta cheese, mint, and cilantro.
