Here’s an easy German Rouladen recipe, but with a twist. Use your air fryer to get a crispy flank steak roll, with all of the flavors of a classic rouladen, but not the hours-long braise times.

I know I make a lot of recipes from all over the world. I feel like the best way to live, is to experience all the good that the world has to offer us–and food is definitely part of the good that the world offers us.
I may deviate while cooking these recipes and not always go the traditional route, as I did with this German Rouladen , however, the concept of the recipe is still the same even if the way I go about it is a little different than what tradition calls for.
I love knowing where food comes from and how it was created in the first place. Sometimes, knowing the origin of the food will help you understand even more about why or how the recipe is made the way the way it is. This German Rouladen is a delicious dish that’s a must-try. Especially if you enjoy trying deviations from traditional recipes.

What Makes This Recipe So Easy?
A typical rouladen involves a long, slow braise. This version gives you an entirely new dish, albeit with the same ingredients. It’s a great example of how you can change the taste of foods entirely, just by changing how you cook them.
There is no braising in my recipe. It’s all air fried and cooked quickly. Given that, I am sure some of you will question whether I should even legitimately call this a rouladen, much less a German Rouladen. But yes. I think I will, just because it’s at least a name and a concept that’s familiar to many of us.
I like to make things easy for all of us. So unlike traditional recipes, I also don’t pound that meat at all for this German Rouladen.
What Is Rouladen?
The word “rouladen” is just French for “to roll.” In other words, German Rouladen literally translates into German roll.
The origin of this dish is unknown but, it’s always used a cheaper slice of beef and included onions, bacon, mustard, and pickles-almost like steak roll sandwich.
However, I have adjusted mine to a different version, so not all of these ingredients are used but, it still tastes absolutely delicious and I think you’ll love it.
What Cut Of Meat Is A Rouladen?
Traditionally you would use thin slices of top round roast. Since I use flank steak for many of my other recipes, I tend to keep it in my refrigerator. So, for my rendition of German rouladen I used flank steak.

Ingredients You’ll Need
While this list of ingredients may seem daunting at first glance, most of them are kitchen staples. Even if you have to run out and grab a few extra things to make this dish, I guarantee the flavor will make up for any inconvenience this may be.
For the Sauce
- Oil
- Onion
- Sour cream
- Tomato Paste
- Dill Pickles
- Chopped Parsley
For the Steak
- Flank steak
- Dijon mustard
- Ground Black Pepper
- Bacon
- Chopped Parsley
How To Make Rouladen
- Mix together sliced onions, salt, and pepper.
- Cook the onions in the air fryer.
- Once the onions are cooked, set aside half of them to use in the steak roll. Put the rest of the onions in a bowl and mix them with the sour cream, tomato paste, chopped pickles, and parsley. Use water to thin the sauce if desired.
- Spread the mustard on the meat. Layer on the bacon slices, remaining grilled onion, and parsley. Sprinkle with some ground pepper.
- Roll up the steak as tightly as you can, ending seam side down. Cut the roll in half so it fits into your air fryer basket.
- Cook the rolled steak in your air fryer until it has reached an internal temperature of 145°F.
- Serve with sauce and enjoy!

Ingredients
For the Sauce
- ▢ 3 tablespoons ( 3 tablespoons ) Oil
- ▢ 2 cups ( 320 g ) Onion , sliced thick
- ▢ 1/2 cup ( 115 g ) sour cream
- ▢ 1 tablespoon ( 1 tablespoon ) Tomato Paste
- ▢ 1/4 cup Dill Pickles , chopped
- ▢ 1 teaspoon ( 1 teaspoon ) Chopped Parsley
For the Steak
- ▢ 1 pound ( 453.59 g ) flank steak , about 1/4-1/2 inch thick
- ▢ 1/4 cup ( 62.25 g ) Dijon mustard
- ▢ 1 teaspoon ( 1 teaspoon ) Ground Black Pepper
- ▢ 4 ( 4 ) Bacon
- ▢ 1/4 cup ( 15 g ) Chopped Parsley
Instructions
- In a small bowl mix together sliced onions, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper.
- Set the air fryer to 400F for 5-8 minutes.
- When the onions are cooked, set aside half the onions to use in the steak roll. Put the rest of the onions in a small bowl and mix them with the sour cream, tomato paste, chopped pickles, and 2 teaspoons of parsley. Add 1-2 tablespoons of water if you need to thin the sauce.
- For the Rolls: Lightly spread the mustard on the meat. Follow with the bacon slices, reserved grilled onion and parsley. Sprinkle a little ground pepper on top. Roll up the steak as tightly as you can, ending seam side down. Using a sharp knife, cut the roll in half so that you can better fit it into your air fryer basket.
- Set your air fryer to 400F for 8-10 minutes, or until your steak has reached an internal temperature of 145°F. It is critical to not overcook skirt steak, so as to not toughen the meat.
- Serve with the sauce.

What Kind Of Apples Do You Use
For this Instant Pot Applesauce, you will want to pick a softer apple that has a good flavor combination of sweet and tart. My favorite apples to use are Golden Delicious, Jonathan Gold, and Fuji.
Do You Have To Peel Apples For Applesauce?
You don’t HAVE to peel the apples if you wash them thoroughly before you cook them. However, for this recipe, I decided to peel the apples. I like a more traditional texture in my applesauce, so chose to omit them.
If you choose to leave the peel on your apples, make sure you take the time to core and remove the seeds from the apples before you cook them. The seeds will give a bitter taste to your applesauce.
Can You Overcook Apples For Applesauce?
I know you’re thinking “If you’re just going to puree the apples, you surely can’t overcook them, right.”
Wrong. You absolutely can overcook apples. If apples are overcooked, no matter which method you use to make your applesauce, they begin to lose their flavor.
Use my Instant Pot Cooking time to ensure you aren’t overcooking your apples and creating a big pot of flavorless apple mush instead.
How Can I Make Applesauce Taste Better?
When most people think of applesauce, they think of the super sweet store-bought variety. I originally came up with this recipe to try to reduce the amount of sugar we were consuming.
If the flavor of this Instant Pot Applesauce isn’t sweet enough for you, feel free to add more sugar or cinnamon to it to reach your desired taste.

Ingredients You’ll Need
- Apples
- Cinnamon Sticks
- Honey
- Lemon Juice
- Water
How To Make Instant Pot Applesauce
- Peel, core, and remove any remaining seeds from the apples.
- Cut the apples into 1" chunks
- Place the apples, water, and cinnamon sticks in your Instant Pot liner.
- Set your Instant Pot to High Pressure for 6 minutes and allow the pressure to release naturally.
- Remove the Instant Pot lid. Remove the cinnamon sticks and allow the apple mixture to cool to room temperature.
- Use an immersion blender or a potato masher to puree the applesauce.
- Add lemon juice and honey to taste and stir well.
- Serve and enjoy!
Tips And Tricks
- Remove the seeds. I know I mentioned it earlier, but double check that you remove all of the seeds from the applesauce. They can be VERY bitter and ruin the whole batch if cooked with the apples.
- Switch up the liquid. If you want a sweeter, more intense apple flavor, use apple juice or apple cider instead of water in this recipe.
- Add more spices. I only added cinnamon sticks to flavor this Instant Pot Applesauce, but nutmeg, cloves, or allspice make a lovely addition as well.
- Make it sweeter. With no additional sugar added to this homemade applesauce, you may be craving a little more sweetness. Feel free to add sugar or a sugar substitute. If you’re wanting to keep the sweetness natural, you can add a bit of honey.
