Instant Pot Black Eyed Peas With Ham - 11

I’ve lived in Texas for 30 years. In fact, I’ve lived longer here than I have in any other part of the world. Jobs, marriage, children, joint custody etc. all make it so I just stayed here, and I have very much come to appreciate life here.

Part of the life, of course, is the food in the South. Nothing is more Southern than Black Eyed Peas . Everyone has their own way of making it, but I wanted to share mine.

Why You’ll Love This Southern Side Dish

  • Hearty, comforting flavor with smoky ham, tender peas, and savory greens.
  • High in protein and fiber , making it filling and satisfying as a full meal or side dish.
  • Simple ingredients with big flavor , no complicated steps required.
  • Fast-cooking in the Instant Pot , no overnight soaking needed for the peas.

This dish is warm, wholesome, economical, and deeply flavorful, everything comfort food should be.

What Are Beans and Greens?

It’s a recipe comprised of exactly what it sounds like. A combination of dark greens (typically kale, spinach, or collard greens ) and beans (cannellini beans, black-eyed peas , navy beans etc). It’s a very simple recipe that’s affordable and a big part of a tradition in the south.

Stovetop . Simmer beans in a pot of water on the stovetop for 30-45 minutes or until they are the desired texture. Drain water and serve or add to a recipe. Instant Pot. Cook black eyed peas with two cups of water under high pressure in your Instant Pot for 10 minutes. Allow pressure to release naturally. Drain water and serve or add to a recipe.

In my opinion, the Instant Pot is the best way to cook them. It is so fast and you can prep the rest of the recipe you plan on adding them to while they cook.

Soaking the beans decreases the cooking time. If you plan on cooking the beans on the stovetop, you may want to soak the beans in hot water for a few minutes before boiling. If you’re cooking the black eyed peas in your Instant Pot, you can skip this step.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 1 cup Dried Black Eyed Peas - The heart of the dish. They’re creamy, earthy, and traditional. When pressure-cooked, they become tender and flavorful as they absorb seasoning and broth.

  • 1 Onion - Builds the foundational savory flavor, becoming sweet and soft as it cooks into the broth.
  • 6 cloves Garlic - Adds depth, aroma, and warm savory backbone throughout the dish.
  • 2 Smoked Ham Hocks - Provide smoky richness, salt, and meaty flavor while also contributing tenderness and body to the broth.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt - Enhances natural flavors and helps season the peas and greens as they soften.
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Black Pepper - Adds warmth and mild heat, balancing the smokiness and richness of the dish.
  • 2 cups Vegetable Stock - Supplies moisture for pressure cooking while adding seasoning and flavor. It’s much richer than water alone.
  • 1–2 teaspoons Red Pepper Flakes - Brings adjustable heat and brightness that cuts through the creaminess of the peas.
  • 2 Bay Leaves - Add subtle herbal depth and classic Southern-style flavor, removed before serving.
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Thyme - Earthy and aromatic, thyme enhances the greens, ham, and broth with traditional Southern seasoning.
  • 2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar - Brightens and sharpens the dish, cutting through richness and enhancing flavor once cooking is complete.
  • 1–2 teaspoons Louisiana Hot Sauce - Adds tangy heat and Southern character while lifting the flavors at the end.
  • 1 teaspoon Liquid Smoke - Provides smoky depth that mimics ham hock flavor, especially useful if making the dish without meat.

  • No soaking needed . The pressure cooker softens dried peas beautifully without advance prep.
  • Cut greens into bite-size pieces so they soften evenly and blend well with the peas.

Variations

Make it once as this recipe calls for, and then go crazy with your own variations.

  • Beans : Black eyed peas , Butter beans, navy bean, cranberry beans, cannellini beans
  • Meats : smoked turkey wings, ham hocks, andouille sausage, bacon
  • Greens : Collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, kale, or mixed greens of whatever you have lying around
  • Vegetables : Add tomatoes, especially for the vegan version to get some additional flavor

My version uses black-eyed peas and collard greens because that’s what I had on hand.

How To Make This RecipeVegan

  • Skip the meat. I know this is obvious, but I have to include it.
  • Increase the liquid smoke. This will help increase the flavor in the dish since you removed the meat.
  • Add some tomatoes. This makes it a more hearty dish. Plus tomatoes pair beautifully with black eyed peas .

What To Eat With Black Eyed Peas With Ham

This hearty Southern classic pairs beautifully with comforting sides, warm breads, and fresh accents that help balance its smoky, savory richness. These serving ideas work whether you’re enjoying it as a New Year’s tradition or a cozy weeknight meal.

Can I Make Pressure Cooker Black Eyed Peas With Ham In Advance?

Absolutely. Some people will ONLY make them this way. This is because the flavors in the black eyed pea recipe marry in the fridge and get better over time. Making them a day or two before your meal will only make them better. So, go for it.

Can You Freeze Them?

Yes, you can freeze Instant Pot black eyed peas with ham and greens, and they hold up wonderfully for future meals. Allow the dish to cool completely, then transfer it, broth and all, into a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag, leaving a little space for expansion.

The peas, greens, and ham maintain their texture well once frozen, and having some of the cooking liquid stored with them prevents dryness during reheating.

Properly stored, they will stay fresh in the freezer for up to 2–3 months. When you’re ready to serve them again, simply thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave until hot and tender.

Philly Cheesesteak - 32

Why You Should Make This Philly Cheesesteak Recipe

  • Fast. Ready in under 30 minutes .
  • Easy. Make it all with the help of your air fryer .
  • Delicious. The flavor of the steak paired with the onions and peppers is simply amazing.
  • High Protein. A whopping 47 grams of protein per serving.

Meat, veggies, bread, and cheese all cooked in your air fryer? Yes, please. This dish is simple but, very filling. Besides, anything that has bread and cheese in it is a win as far as I’m concerned. Philly Cheesesteak has never been better than when I cooked it in the air fryer.

What I’m saying is that, if you already loved this meal before, you’ll love it even more once you try it my way.

Philly Cheesesteak is super easy to make in the air fryer which only makes me love it even.

When you cook this recipe without the air fryer, there are a lot more steps before you have the finished dish.

However, with the air fryer, you take out all those extra cooking steps but end up with an even better outcome–funny how that works.

Are Philly Cheesesteaks Keto?

All you have to do is eat these without the sub rolls, and hey presto! Keto Dinner from your air fryer! The meat, veggies, and cheese are so flavorful that I actually prefer them without the bread.

You can always wrap them in lettuce but you don’t need to do any of that.

Simply chow down on the keto deliciousness of the filling, and enjoy your meal.

What Kind Of Meat Is Used For Philly Cheesesteak?

When making a traditional Philly Cheesesteak , you would want to use thinly sliced ribeye. That’s what I used in this recipe. But depending on what your budget is, you may opt for a cheaper cut of meat, such as flank steak or skirt steak.

Just remember that each cut of meat will have a different flavor profile depending on where it is cut from.

Can You Make A Chicken Philly Cheesesteak?

You sure can! While it might not be traditional, it sure is tasty. Cook the chicken for 10 minutes, plus an additional 5-8 minutes after flipping at 375F, and allow to rest. Thinly slice for a tender Chicken Philly Cheesesteak bite.

How To Make A Philly Cheesesteak In Your Air Fryer

  1. Slice the meat as thinly as you can. In a bowl, toss the meat with Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce. Season to taste with salt and pepper; set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, toss the onion and pepper slices with the oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Place the meat and vegetables in the air fryer basket.
  3. Set the air fryer to 400°F. and cook for 15 minutes, tossing once or twice until the meat and vegetables are cooked through.
  4. Remove the meat and vegetables, cover, and set aside.
  5. Spread the insides of the rolls with the butter. Place the rolls in the air fryer basket, top sides down, for 3 minutes or until lightly toasted. Remove the rolls from the basket and set them aside. You can choose to skip this step.
  6. Divide the meat and vegetables between the two rolls. Top with peppers and onion. Top each with a slice of cheese. Heat for 2 minutes or until the cheese melts. Serve immediately.

What Is The Best Cheese for Philly Cheese Steaks?

I’m not one to tell you how to live your life. Especially when it comes to cheese. It’s all pretty delicious, in my opinion. But if you’re a traditionalist, you’ll probably want to use white American or provolone cheese.

But if you want to whip out the Cheez Whiz, I’m here for that too. Just keep in mind that it’s already melty, so skip the melting step and add room-temperature cheese to the warm meat for the perfect result.

What Is the Secret To A Philly Cheesesteak?

  • If you have trouble slicing the meat thinly, you may choose to freeze the meat for 30 minutes. Me, I’m usually in too much of a hurry to do that. If you have a meat slicer, that will do the trick. ( Click here to watch my review of the Chef’s Choice Meat Slicer )
  • If not, ensuring your knife is kept sharpened will help with the thin slicing without having to use any freezing or special methods.
  • I like to use ribeye steak for this Philly Cheesesteak recipe . However, if need be, you can use flank steak, or another steak you have on hand.
  • Just remember, the flavor may not be the same. Each cut of steak has varying qualities, so be sure that you’re aware of the differences and are okay with the variances in the cut. It has the potential to change the consistency and flavor of the recipe.
  • For a low carb option simply omit the hoagie rolls. The Meat, cheese, and veggies are deliciously keto, and a serving clocks in at 4 gms of carbs!
