What is a chaffle (keto waffle)? If you’re eating low carb or Keto, you have probably heard all the rage about chaffles! Let me show you what they are and why they’re worth the hype - and all the recipes you need to try!

20+ Chaffles Recipe Ideas: The Best Keto Waffle Recipes You Must Try - 5

Ingredients You’ll Need For These Chaffle Recipe Ideas

The basics are some combo of egg and cheese but from here you can riff like mad. You can use a variety of cheeses including cream cheese, parmesan cheese, etc. Some add almond flour and flaxseed, and baking powder, others don’t.

Why Is It Called A Chaffle?

You’ll notice from most of the recipes included in this post, the main ingredient is cheese.

Cheese + Waffles = Chaffles

four different keto chaffle recipes - 6

How To Make A Chaffle?

Below is my basic Keto waffles (chaffles) recipe :

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup cheese
  • Layer 1/4 cup of cheese on the bottom of the waffle maker.
  • Add half the beaten egg.
  • Layer the other 1/4 cup of cheese on top.
  • Cook until crisp. Keep in mind the chaffle gets crispier as it cools.

Keto Waffles are all the rage because even though I have a ton of Keto bread recipes like my Keto Bread , Keto Cheese Muffins , Keto Blueberry Muffins , Cauliflower breadsticks , and Keto Pancakes - sometimes people want something low carb and bready that they can make in a flash.

Hence the Chaffle .

  • Keto Silver Dollar Pancakes - These are SO good and easy to make!
  • Keto Bread - Makes awesome slicing bread, toast, croutons and more!
  • Keto Chocolate Waffles . So yummy!
  • Cauliflower chaffles can also be used for a keto pizza crust.
  • Oreo Chaffles! Make a double batch of the chocolate chaffles and make oreo chaffles as well.
  • Zucchini Chaffles are another great savory chaffle option.

What Kind Of Waffle Maker Can You Use To Make This Chaffles Recipe?

You can absolutely use the same recipes that I’ve provided for some tasty chaffles and cook them in a skillet as more of a pancake or flatbread. If you want the actual waffle texture that chaffles are known for, you will need to use a waffle iron.

People are having the most success using this Dash Mini Waffle Iron to make their low carb waffles . It makes the perfect size to cook them quickly and crisps them up just right.

The reason the small one is best, is that you can make chaffle sandwiches using the mini size waffle iron. With a larger or thicker chaffle , it can make for a very thick sandwich.

Can I Make A Chaffle In Myregular waffle iron?

You can use a full-size one like this Cuisinart , but try not to use a Belgian waffle maker as it takes forever to crisp a thick waffle iron. The trick is to cook it long enough for it to properly crisp up your chaffle recipe .

20+ Chaffles Recipe Ideas: The Best Keto Waffle Recipes You Must Try - 7

Can You Freeze A Chaffle?

Yes, you can freeze chaffles . Place them in a freezer bag with a piece of parchment paper between each one or just freeze them in small freezer bags, two per bag.

Can You Reheat This Chaffles Recipe?

You can defrost in the microwave or air fryer at 300F for 2-3 minutes at most when you’re ready to eat.

Do Low Carb Waffles Taste Eggy?

The more things you add the less likely they are to taste eggy.

If they taste super eggy to you, use egg whites which makes them less eggy tasting.

How Do You Serve A Keto Waffle?

Most people use them as bread substitutes, so its not unusual to see chaffle sandwiches. Of course, if-you make one of the sweet chaffles below, then you eat them by themselves.

Of course, I would ALWAYS be in favor of whipped cream on any dessert-y thing!

15+ Tips and Tricks for How to Make the BEST Chaffles Ever

  1. Patience . That’s the best tip. They don’t take very long but if you want a crisp keto waffle , you are just going to have to be a little patient and let it take the 5-7 minutes that it takes to crisp up. Just when you think it’s done? Give it another minute or two. Don’t rush.
  2. Layering . If you’re making a chaffle recipe with cheese, the way to do this is to layer cheese at the bottom, pour in a tablespoon or so of egg, and then top with cheese again. It’s the crispy cheese on the bottom and top that will make them crispy.
  3. Shallow waffles. If you want crispy waffles, the shallower the waffle iron, the easier/faster it is to crisp up the chaffle.
  4. No overfilling. Overfilled chaffle makers…well, they overflow of course. Which makes a huge mess! So if in doubt, underfill rather than overfill. No more than 1/4 cup of TOTAL ingredients at a time.
  5. Squeeze it . I’ve heard of other people using squeeze bottles so they can get just a little egg into the mini waffle maker.
  6. Easy cleanup . I like to use a wet paper towel when the waffle iron is warm, to make cleanup easy. Not hot though–obviously! Just warm.
  7. Brush it. I’ve found a toothbrush works well to clean between the waffle iron teeth. You can also try this sponge cleaner , which I also use to clean the little area on the rim of my Instant Pot .
  8. No peeking . I can tell you from LOTS of personal experience, that opening the waffle iron every 30 seconds “just to check” doesn’t hep the chaffle cook any faster. Your best bet is to not even open it for 4-5 minutes.
  9. No steaming. if you’re using the Dash mini , the little blue light goes out when it’s mostly cooked, but most importantly, the chaffle stops steaming quite so much. That’s a good sign that it’s done.
  10. Get hot. Wait until the waffle iron is hot before you add ingredients, and they’re a lot less likely to stick, and a lot easier to clean up.
  11. Mat it. Okay so about that overflow. I do find that it happens to me more often than I would like! One thing that has made cleanup easier for me has been to put a silicone trivet underneath.
  12. Slice or shred . I know most recipes out there suggest shredded cheese, but I have better luck with the thinnest slice of cheese I can buy. I find it crisps a lot faster.
  13. Not-so-eggy . If you find your chaffles too eggy, use egg white instead of the whole egg.
  14. Not-so-cheesy . If you want them to taste less cheesy, try mozzarella cheese.
  15. Crispy Cooling. Allow the chaffles to cool before eating. They get crisper as they cool, so try not to stuff the hot keto waffle into your mouth right away.
  16. Make lots . Make enough to share, everyone will want them, no matter whether they’re keto or not.

How Long Do They Last?

Chaffles last a surprisingly long time if they’re stored correctly.

My favorite way to store them is in an air-tight glass or BPA free container.

If you layer them between pieces of parchment or wax paper, it keeps them from sticking together. Then, you can reheat them in the toaster or an air fryer for a quick meal solution.

Expect to be able to keep prepared chaffles on hand for 5-7 days for a great meal prep solution.

What To Serve With Them?

Not sure how to serve some of these chaffle recipes?

Enjoy them as sweet or savory meal solutions.

Either top them with sweet additions for a great breakfast or snack. For a savory option, add meat, cheese, or turn two into a tasty sandwich.

With this list of low carb waffles, you’ll never have to search for another Chaffles recipe again. From sweet to savory, your chaffle cravings will be a thing of the past. If you enjoyed these recipes, make sure you share them on Facebook and Pinterest so you can make them again later.

Chaffle Recipes

Equipment

  • Dash Mini Waffle Maker
  • KITCHENAID IMMERSION BLENDER

Ingredients

  • ▢ 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ▢ 1 Eggs

Instructions

  • Beat the egg.

  • Layer 1/4 cup of the cheese into the waffle maker.

  • Add the egg on top of the cheese.

  • Add the remaining 1/4 cup of cheese on top of the egg.

  • Cook until it’s crispy. It gets crispier as it cools too.

  • Patience . That’s the best tip. They don’t take very long but if you want a crisp keto waffle, you are just going to have to be a little patient and let it take the 5-7 minutes that it takes to crisp up. Just when you think it’s done? Give it another minute or two. Don’t rush.

  • Layering . If you’re making a chaffle with cheese, the way to do this is to layer cheese at the bottom, pour in a tablespoon or so of egg, and then top with cheese again. It’s the crispy cheese on the bottom and top that will make them crispy.

  • Shallow waffles. If you want crispy waffles, the shallower the waffle iron, the easier/faster it is to crisp up the chaffle.

  • No overfilling. Overfilled chaffle makers…well, they overflow of course. Which makes a huge mess! So if in doubt, underfill rather than overfill. No more than 1/4 cup of TOTAL ingredients at a time.

  • Squeeze it . I’ve heard of other people using squeeze bottles so they can get just a little egg into the mini waffle maker.

  • Easy cleanup . I like to use a wet paper towel when the waffle iron is warm, to make cleanup easy. Not hot though–obviously! Just warm.

  • Brush it. I’ve found a toothbrush works well to clean between the waffle iron teeth. You can also try this sponge cleaner , which I also use to clean the little area on the rim of my Instant Pot .

  • No peeking . I can tell you from LOTS of personal experience, that opening the waffle iron every 30 seconds “just to check” doesn’t hep the chaffle cook any faster. Your best bet is to not even open it for 4-5 minutes.

  • No steaming. if you’re using the Dash mini , the little blue light goes out when it’s mostly cooked, but most importantly, the chaffle stops steaming quite so much. That’s a good sign that it’s done.

  • Get hot. Wait until the waffle iron is hot before you add ingredients, and they’re a lot less likely to stick, and a lot easier to clean up.

  • Mat it. Okay so about that overflow. I do find that it happens to me more often than I would like! One thing that has made cleanup easier for me has been to put a silicone trivet underneath.

  • Slice or shred . I know most recipes out there suggest shredded cheese, but I have better luck with the thinnest slice of cheese I can buy. I find it crisps a lot faster.

  • Not-so-eggy . If you find your chaffles too eggy, use egg white instead of the whole egg.

  • Not-so-cheesy . If you want them to taste less cheesy, try mozzarella cheese.

  • Crispy Cooling. Allow the chaffles to cool before eating. They get crisper as they cool, so try not to stuff the hot chaffle into your mouth right away.

  • Make lots . Make enough to share, everyone will want them, no matter whether they’re keto or not.

Keto Diet Plan Week 2! Thinking of getting started on Keto? Totally confused by where to start?

For those of you who would like to give Keto a try and don’t know where to start, I’ve put together a simple plan to help you kick off a ketogenic diet. My goal here is to break it down and make the ketogenic diet easy and less intimidating in order to get you started.

Keto Diet Plan Week 2 - 104

Congratulations! You made it through week 1 of Keto ! You’ve accomplished more than most people on their health journey, so give yourself a pat on your back!

If you’ve completed keto week one , then by now you should have fully cut out potatoes, pasta, bread, rice, grains, beans, and sugar and you’re probably starting to feel different. Your body tends to crave what you give it so hopefully, after a week, the cravings for carbs have subsided a little.

Keto Diet Plan Week 2

In week 2 I recommend that you still don’t count macros and calories . Give your body a chance to adjust to the lack of carbs before you think about cutting calories. Carb withdrawal combined with calorie withdrawal is a tough double-punch for most people, and the number 1 reason people quit keto.

Three rules for a Keto Diet Plan | Week 2:

You should already have given up grains, legumes/beans, and pasta/rice/potatoes.

For the Keto Diet Plan Week 2 you have only three simple rules to follow:

  1. Reduce fruit to once a day if you haven’t already. This is a good time to switch to low glycemic fruits like berries and begin to cut out high glycemic choices like bananas and watermelon.
  2. Go at least 4 hours between meals. Do not eat snacks in between. For example, you might eat at 8 am, noon, 4 pm, and 8 pm. This will help to keep insulin levels down and help you start to get into ketosis. The science behind this is due to the fact that eating causes insulin release. Insulin release = no fat burning. If you get super hungry, first drink a glass of water or a sugar-free beverage of choice. If that doesn’t work, eat a fat bomb .
  3. Drink at least 64 oz of liquid every day this week. Use it to hydrate, to fill your stomach in between meals, flush out toxins, and to begin to create good habits. Plus, drinking a lot of water really does help with fat loss.

This week you will continue to enjoy the same meat, veggies, nuts, cheese, cream, bacon, avocados, and other high fat, medium protein, and low carb meals as week one. You just start to add a little structure by not eating more frequently than every four hours.

How you might feel during week 2

If you felt the “ keto flu ” during week 1, you probably won’t continue to suffer the effects this week, but many people start feeling sluggish during week 2. The symptoms of keto flu might include:

  • Fatigue, low energy, and feeling exhausted
  • Digestive issues like constipation
  • Headaches
  • Muscle weakness, decreased exercise performance and trouble feeling recovered from workouts
  • Moodiness and irritability
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Brain fog and lack of concentration

It’s helpful to keep in mind that if you feel this way that means your diet is working — your body is transferring from using one form of fuel to another, and you will begin to see results. If symptoms persist make sure you’re getting enough water as dehydration is often the culprit.

In fact, this might be a good time to start adding electrolytes to your diet. Because ketosis pulls water out of your cells it’s important to get plenty of salt and electrolytes in order to stay hydrated.

Also, if you’ve gotten off of junk and processed foods for your keto diet then you might not be getting the sodium you’re used to, so it’s important to add high mineral sea salt to your diet to ensure you don’t get dehydrated and cramp .

Also, make sure you’re getting enough sleep as sleep deprivation will make the keto flu worse. Many people report ending this week feeling lighter and more energetic and even start to see some weight loss. If you’re not one of them, hang in there, it will come soon.

My last bit of advice for week 2 is, do not get discouraged. Remember you are breaking a life-long habit of carbohydrate addiction, and it could get uncomfortable as your body reacts both physically and mentally.

You might feel sluggish, but keep in mind that means it’s working — your body is transferring from using one form of fuel to another, and you will begin to see results soon.
